Oh it was never about the cyclops, Poseidon is very petty and very hypocritical. Poseidon is more pissed at Odysseus blatantly disrespecting him through his son. In Ruthlessness he even says "I'm left without a choice, I'm left without a doubt", because Odysseus in showing "mercy" also showed arrogance and pettily revealed his name to a vengeful cyclops that is forever disfigured. There was no feasible way for Poseidon to know it was Odysseus UNTIL he did that. He essentially sent out a direct challenge for the Cyclops to attempt to get revenge with no idea the consequences of such. He underestimated his opponent. Overall...Poseidon is more angry at how stupid he was in the moment. Especially since the Cyclops did kill his men, he showed mercy to a being that was already proven cruel...there was no point to it. Odysseus killed an infant to save the future of a nation but couldn't kill a man eating cyclops out of his own pettiness and desire for the Cyclops to live a miserable life with the knowledge he was bested by a mortal because of his own anger at the death of his friend.
